Things to Do in Kitchener-Waterloo This Spring
Spring in Kitchener-Waterloo hits differently. After a long Ontario winter, the city wakes up fast — patios open, trails fill up, the farmers' market gets busy again, and suddenly there's a reason to be outside. Here's how to make the most of it.
Get Outside on the Trails
KW's trail network is genuinely one of the best reasons to live here — or visit. Over 500 km of connected paths, and the Iron Horse Trail right through the city core. Spring is the best time to ride: the trails are quiet, the trees are green, and the weather is cool enough that you won't overheat.
An e-bike is the best way to cover ground without it feeling like a workout. You can do a 25–30 km loop from downtown Kitchener to St. Jacobs and back in a morning, stop for lunch in the village, and still have energy for the afternoon.
Hit the St. Jacobs Farmers' Market
The St. Jacobs Farmers' Market runs year-round, but spring is when it really comes alive. Local produce starts coming back in — asparagus, rhubarb, early greens — alongside the usual Mennonite baked goods, maple syrup, fresh meats, and cheese. It's one of the largest year-round markets in Canada, and on a Saturday morning in May, it's worth getting there early.
The market is about 12 km from Uptown Waterloo by bike — a scenic, mostly flat ride through the countryside.
Explore Victoria Park
Victoria Park in downtown Kitchener is at its best in spring. The lake thaws, the trees bud, and the walking paths fill with people who've been cooped up all winter. It's a perfect morning stop — coffee in hand, lap around the lake, no agenda.
Discover Uptown Waterloo by Patio
Uptown Waterloo's patios open as soon as the temperature allows — sometimes in April, reliably by May. King Street fills up on weekends, and the independent restaurant scene here is worth exploring. Block off an afternoon with no plan and just walk until something looks good.
Waterloo Park
Waterloo Park is a large green space in the heart of the city — trails, open fields, a small zoo (Silver Lake Waterfowl Sanctuary), and easy access to the university campuses. Spring weekends here are busy in the best way. It's the kind of park that makes you feel good about where you live.
